If you grew up in Canada with any affinity for design, you’ll have heard of Sarah Richardson. Not only is she an expert on living in style, she’s also purchased, renovated and documented a variety of properties dedicated to “tackling the demands and design challenges of modern living.”
In REAL TIME Episode 7, we speak with the HGTV legend about her design advice, lessons learned and favourite techniques. We hear it all, including:
On REALTOR.ca:
“[It’s] my most fun and my most expensive hobby. But to this day, the REALTOR.ca app has never led me astray, never led me down the wrong garden path, but I will say it has set me off on some really great adventures.”
On our shifting perspectives:
“For all the challenges that, as a global community, we faced in 2020, I hope one of the silver linings can be that people embrace the importance of home and realize this isn’t just a place to throw in some furniture and toss a few pillows on—this is your safety zone. This is your nest.”
On style and budget:
“I believe that living in style, loving your home should be attainable for everyone … I’ve always said it’s not about where you shop, it’s about what you choose to introduce into your home.”
On finding the perfect home:
“The reason I think homes are an emotional purchase … it’s that moment of stepping across the threshold and you really can’t describe that feeling when you can imagine yourself living in that home and it feels like you need to be there.”
On the value of using a REALTOR®:
“It is such an important relationship to feel that you have a foundation that’s built on trust and respect and feeling that they have your best interests at heart. Because, ultimately, they’re going to lobby for you, negotiate for you, advocate for you and if the going gets tough—if there’s a snag along the way—they’re going to make sure it gets done.”
