Young Professional Networks: Bringing energy and new perspectives to the real estate industry in Canada

In an industry where over 72 per cent of REALTORS® are 41 years of age or older1, getting into the business can be a bit daunting. As new members learn the ropes, their voices are often missing from key discussions and policy decisions. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

To help new members get involved in the world of organized real estate, several local Boards and provincial Associations across Canada have created, or are in the process of creating, Young Professional Networks (YPNs). At the provincial level, both the Association of Saskatchewan REALTORS® (ASR) and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) have YPN committees that consist of REALTORS® who volunteer to organize YPN events aimed at bringing REALTORS®, with varying levels of experience, together.

According to Noel Geremia, the 2013-2014 Chair of ASR’s YPN committee, “being part of a YPN demonstrates a REALTOR®’s commitment to the real estate industry, as well as to their colleagues and clients. It gives them the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded professionals and level-up – gaining skills and experience through networking and knowledge-sharing. Decisions on the future of organized real estate are happening all the time and can have a long-lasting effect on our careers. YPNs can help young and new REALTORS® obtain seats on committees, taskforces and an audience with key industry decision-makers, giving us a voice on local, provincial and national issues.”

YPNs are win-win, for members and Boards and Associations alike. These networks help Boards and Associations identify and build relationships with REALTORS® who wish to get involved and play active roles in organized real estate. YPN membership helps REALTORS® get acquainted with their Board or Association’s staff, committees, and taskforces and stay abreast of opportunities for engagement.

Don’t let the name fool you. These networks can help REALTORS® – both young and experienced – excel in the business. YPN events provide perfect networking opportunities for REALTORS® to gain valuable business contacts, learn “tips of the trade” from seasoned pros and fresh perspectives from new members on the scene.

If you’ve been a part of a YPN, please share your experiences in the Comments below. If you’re interested in getting involved, contact your local Board or provincial Association to learn about opportunities in your region.

Nicole was often on the front lines, liaising with our government and private sector partners, supporting our Federal Affairs Committee, and administrating our online advocacy platform – the REALTOR® Action Network. In her spare time, Nicole likes to spend her time playing volleyball, reading, and exploring Ottawa and the surrounding area with her family and dog, Reese.
