What I wish someone had told me at the onset of my career

We know REALTORS® have a lot of experience and insight to share, which is why we’re offering REALTORS® Corner, a members-only outlet for sharing peer-to-peer and industry-related content. Let us know if you’re interested in becoming a contributor, too.

The real estate industry is fast, dynamic and full of opportunity. Throughout my career I have had the privilege of meeting many REALTORS® who have helped me in one way or another, but here are five things I wish someone told me at the onset of my career:

1) Suit up:
If you want to be treated like a professional, act like a professional. When I first got into real estate I wanted to be treated with respect, but it is hard to be taken seriously when you do not look like a professional. I quickly learned my interactions with the public were more positive when I looked the part – in a suit.

2) Get out there:
I cannot stress enough the importance of leads. When I first started out, I knocked on approximately 100-200 doors a day. I selected an area and each day I worked to cover a part of it … small steps. But, it’s a numbers game and the more people you contact, the greater the odds are of closing a sale.

3) Learn from others:
Everyone will have a question at some point in their career. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Working with others – whether by referrals or geographic area, can help grow your business, let you bounce ideas of one another and learn from past mistakes. When I first started, I turned to instructors, coaches, sales representatives, brokers, and Brokers of Record to ensure I had a firm grasp on everything from preparing an offer to speaking with clients. Young Professionals Network events are great avenues to meet like-minded individuals facing similar challenges. Don’t reinvent the wheel. As they say, “two heads are better than one.”

4) Remember life beyond real estate:
You may also be a mom, dad, son, daughter, wife, husband, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Take time to appreciate those special people in your life and give yourself a break – it doesn’t make you lazy! I try to keep a balanced schedule; lead generation in the morning and follow-up in the afternoon. I schedule showings in the evenings balanced with family time. Find a schedule that works for you and your family.

5) Think positive:
I try to think optimistically on a daily basis. I try to relax and fill my mind with positive energy by listening to chill-out or jazz music. To release any negative stress, I walk, run, or visit the gym before lead generation or after showings. Set attainable goals, keep smiling and stay relaxed.
