Weekly Blend: December 19, 2014

The Weekly Blend is your ‘weekly’ source covering real estate news that you just may have missed. Our hard at work Weekly Blend crew scours the web, newsgroups and forums looking for obscure, bizarre, interesting and informative real estate (or real estate related) stories. If you have one you’d like to share please feel free to share it in our comments section or tweet about it using the hashtag #WeeklyBlend. So brew yourself a fresh cup of coffee and enjoy these stories…maybe even share them with friends or colleagues. Happy reading!

Here are my weekly picks:

An IKEA in Russia (regularly featured in the Weekly Blend) did it again by giving a movie theatre a cozy makeover so viewers could watch movies in bed.

Spanish IKEA hits two holiday home-runs with two different videos: one asks kids what they really want for Christmas and the other shows the joy of a simple gift.

And in Madrid, Burger King promoted their home delivery by surprising apartment hunters with … well, just check out the video.

Just across the bridge from Ottawa in Gatineau, Quebec, a homeowner (inspired by YouTube videos) created this pretty impressive Christmas lights display. (VIDEO)

In the Netherlands, a man thought destroying his neighbour’s house would be a great way to propose to his girlfriend. (VIDEO)

A California couple, who have been giving each other a bunny gift every day for 20 years, need a bigger space for their self-proclaimed “Bunny Museum” so they have gone to Kickstarter to help raise the $200,000 they need.  Needless to say, all this reminded me of a joke. What do you call 1,000 rabbits jumping backwards? A receding hare-line.

New York City now has a brand new café … The Meow Parlour and, you guessed it, its main clientele can best be described as “cool cats.”

Detroit – once a city in bankruptcy – now has transforming high-rises, chic neighbourhoods, and a young, vibrant community.  (VIDEO)

From WiFi-enabled baby monitors and personal pie-makers to Bluetooth-enabled shower heads, here are 11 gifts that will instantly innovate any home.

And speaking of Star Wars, this homeowner combined Christmas lights with John Williams’ iconic Star Wars score and came up with this light display worthy of any Jedi Warrior or Sith Lord.

It may be difficult to sell property on Japan’s Ghost Island. Once the most crowded place on earth, this tiny island has a big story to tell. (VIDEO)

In this inspired video, a potential customer asks her REALTOR® to either find her, or build her, a house (in one-week) with backyard big enough for a golf course, close to the beach and stores, have lots of stairs, and be a mansion all for the low price of $100.00. It’s well worth watching.

Jonathan Baker, our former Speech Writer, contributed to the development of speeches, advertisements, and communications to our membership. Our staff knew him as the go-to guy at 200 Catherine for some comic relief. Prior to joining CREA, Jon worked in the radio industry in Ottawa. If you meet Jon, be sure to ask him to tell you about his encounters with many famous musicians while volunteering at a local music festival for more than 10 years.
