Set against the backdrop of the Peace Tower, REALTORS® from coast-to-coast-to-coast will be spotted all over the Parliamentary Precinct on September 30 to October 2, proudly displaying Political Action Committee (PAC) pins as they apply a full-court press on federal advocacy issues for homeowners.
With the 2019 federal election looming, decision makers will be more mindful of their constituents’ concerns, presenting PAC Reps with a unique opportunity to raise the profile of REALTORS® while advocating on a variety of issues including the Home Buyers’ Plan (HBP). In an era when government is narrowing access and options for financing property, the HBP must be front and centre, to preserve its relevance and existence as well as to expand its use.
As you prepare to make your way to the nation’s capital, here are a few things to keep in mind during CREA’s 33rd annual PAC Days:
Look the part
From expert open houses to beautiful listing photos, REALTORS® are masters of presentation.
During PAC Days, REALTORS® are looking to make that same flawless first impression with elected officials. The dress code on Parliament Hill is business attire, so you will see Members of Parliament (MPs) and their staff dressed accordingly.
Fall weather in Ottawa can be a bit unpredictable, so a warm jacket, scarf and umbrella could easily come in handy but remember to check the forecast before packing. As with anyone traveling on business, an instant stain remover and lint roller can be very useful in a pinch.
Breeze through security
Security on Parliament Hill is similar to an airport checkpoint. Arrive early and be prepared to remove bags, jackets, belts, jewelry and any other metal items you’re carrying on your person.
Don’t forget you need valid government-issued photo identification to enter any buildings in the Parliamentary Precinct.
Make the most of your meeting
While the chief objective for PAC Days is to effectively present the interests of REALTORS® and homeowners to those who can affect change, it’s equally important to take this opportunity to establish and foster mutually beneficial relationships.
It would be a shame not to get the most out of a brief meeting with a busy MP. Make sure you have business cards on hand to share with them at the conclusion of your meeting, as well as with any members of their staff who participate in the meeting.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a picture and share it on social media. Remember to tag them and use our PAC Days hashtag: #CREAPAC18.

Add a personal touch by sending a thank-you card to the MP and his/her staff, enclosing your business card and reiterating any of the follow-ups discussed in the meeting.
